Kindergarten: Easy as Applesauce!
Did you know that our kindergarten students can cover five subjects when learning about one person?
This week, kindergartners at Monsignor Slade Catholic School studied a famous person from the past: Johnny Appleseed. The class read a book about Johnny Appleseed's contributions to our country and made applesauce.
This cross-curricular unit enables the kindergarten students to incorporate the following subjects: Math, Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts (ELA), and Art!
- Kindergartners were introduced to Johnny Appleseed, a famous person from the past who impacted our country (Social Studies)
- The students learned what a folktale is while reading the embellished stories of Johnny Appleseed's life (ELA)
- They also compared apples by size and color, then taste-tested different types (Math, Science)
- By making their very own pot-shaped hats, the students emulated Johnny Appleseed (Art)
Fun was had by all! And their applesauce was delicious! Re-discover Johnny Appleseed as an adult with this great MentalFloss post.
