Great Kindness Challenge Underway at Monsignor Slade
Students are working toward certifying Monsignor Slade as a kind school for the third year in a row.
School-wide Effort
As a school, the students, Mrs. D'Anna, and Mrs. Watkins created a collaborative work of art. In a mural installed in the entrance hallway, each student created a butterfly. Those butterflies were fashioned into a mural depicting the impact that can be had when kindness is given wings.
Each day during morning announcements, a kindness challenge is issued. So far the kindness challenges have included:
Monday: Be kind to yourself. (Take 5 minutes to give yourself a Mindfulness Break and check-in with how you are feeling.
Tuesday: Make a new friend. (Talk to someone you haven't spoken with before, or do not know very well. Learn three interesting facts about them.)
Wednesday: No one sits or plays alone. (At lunch and recess, sit or play with someone who might otherwise be alone.)
During morning and afternoon announcements kindness quotes are shared with the students. A sampling of those are:
- "So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." Colossians 3:12
- "Nothing can make our life, or the lives of other people, more beautiful than perpetual kindness." ~ Leo Tolstoy
- "Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." ~Desmond Tutu
In the Classroom
Each homeroom created a kindness mural to display throughout the week. The students collaborated to depict a quote about kindness visually. The results of their efforts are beautiful and are brightening up the auditorium while on display this week.
For Students and Families
Every student received a Great Kindness Challenge checklist. Students are invited to complete as many kind acts as they can. The list for families includes some fun activities, too. Take a walk as a family, thank a police officer, and more!
